Bedroom Tour 2017

One of my guilty pleasures is definitely watching room tours on Youtube and exploring bedroom inspiration on Pinterest. There’s just something I love about seeing how people decorate their bedrooms. From the textiles, to the furniture, I love finding inspiration to see what I like and dislike. My bedroom is where I spend the most of my time…so I’ve spent the last 2 years working hard to create a space that I can relax and feel comfortable in.

I’ll be completely honest, although I love my bedroom, it isn’t ‘complete’ in my eyes. I’ve had vision boards of what I wanted my room to look like, and it never fully delivered. But that being said, I absolutely adore my bedroom. In fact, whenever I spend a few days away, I realize that it’s my bedroom that I miss most.

My bedroom has a come a long way. I was living with the same bedroom furniture since I was about 2 years old, when I got my first ‘big girl bed.’  I also want to take this opportunity to thank my mom for making the right decision of buying her little girl a Queen bed, paired with really nice furniture that I didn’t get tired of until I was 18 years old. When I decided I wanted a change, I knew I wanted to make a complete bedroom transformation that suited my needs and looked totally different than what I grew up with. My mom has had a poster bed for as long as I could remember, so I knew right away I wanted one as well. I also grew up with all white furniture, and knew that this was the great chance to try something different. When I first got this furniture in 2012, I painted the walls a deep yellow with an accent wall that was very, very dark purple. Yikes. With those colours, I always had a really tough time choosing decor, accents and textiles.

How did I live with this for so long?!

The purple wall was a huge burden. It made my room look so dark and gloomy. I begged my mom to change it and even though she gave me the whole ‘I told you so’ speech, she gave in and agreed with me. It took 3 coats of heavy duty primer to cover it all up, but once the job was done, we decided to paint my room a neutral grey. It looked sooo much better! My room had life again and the dark furniture didn’t look so dark anymore. But I got a little too excited that I could finally add any colour textiles that I wanted…or so I thought. I purchased a very colourful comforter set that had every single colour on it. I also decorated my room with colourful flowers and decor pieces. Safe to say, I hated it. Once Winter came around, I was tired of having this brightly coloured room that made me feel like I was stuck in Summer mode.

An improvement, but still a bit of a hot mess.

Again, I voiced my concerns to my mom. She was a little peeved, and I didn’t blame her. I kept spending money over and over again and was still unhappy with the results. So I took a month to really research room styles. I made a Pinterest board and spent most of my nights before bed searching for rooms that I loved. I found myself saving the same pins over and over again. Rooms with white textiles and grey accents. With gold and silver decor pieces that made the room look so elegant and glam.

I took the time to really look around town for the items I wanted. I was at Homesense at least 3 days a week. And it was well worth it. I found almost all of my decor items from there (Similar to Homegoods for my American readers!) Homesense is a store I like to think of as a ‘treasure hunt’. There are different items every single day, and items are usually only in quantities of 5 or less. Sometimes even only 1! My Homesense motto is if you love it, grab it. Because if you change your mind after you leave, chances are, it’s not going to be there when you go back. Here’s a funny Homesense story. I went into my local Homesense one day and saw this beautiful lace mannequin as I walked in. I had never seen anything like it, and I knew in those first few seconds that I had to have it. As I walked towards it, a lady picked it up and went to the checkout line. Mouth open, I was in shock. I walked around the entire store to find another one. Nothing. I couldn’t believe it. I was devastated. I knew the chances of finding another one at another Homesense were slim to none. Luckily, we have a lot of Homesenses’ in the Greater Toronto Area. Every day I called around to ask “do you by any chance have a lace mannequin decor piece in your store?” Nothing. I gave up. I even looked online to find one similar and couldn’t quite find one I loved as much as the lace mannequin. A month later, my boyfriend and I were out of the city exploring a town called Oakville on a Sunday afternoon. We stumbled upon a huge Homesense there and of course, I just had to go in to see their selection. There it was. Right as I walked in… the lace mannequin. The EXACT one that I wanted. I ran to it so fast and yelled at my boyfriend to grab a shopping cart. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Ok that’s a little dramatic, but I was extremely happy that day! Moral of the story, shopping at Homesense has it’s ups and downs, but you should never give up!

Isn’t she beautiful??

Of course looking back now I do have some decor regrets. I wish I never got dark brown furniture. Wish I bought a bigger chest of drawers and I could’ve gone with an extra nightstand instead of just one. BUT! I’m moving in less than 2 months and I can’t wait to redo my room with new furniture, new colours and to create it exactly the way I want it now! I can’t wait to blog my experience decorating my new room. Until then, I’ve decided to show you all what my bedroom looks like now! You won’t believe the changes I’ve made. It looks nothing like the room with the purple wall or the colourful bedspread. As always, I will link down below where I’ve purchased all of my bedroom items. Unfortunately, some items are discontinued, or from Homesense. But for the items that are still available, I have linked them down below so they are easy to find!

p.s. The day I took these photos the sun was no longer coming in from my bedroom window. I had to heavily expose them on Lightroom so the quality isn’t as crisp as I’d like it. Please forgive me!
